Hair Oiling Explained
Hair oiling is one of the oldest hair care practices in the world, yet it is often misunderstood. When used correctly, oils support scalp comfort, reduce breakage, improve shine, and protect the hair fibre. When used incorrectly, they can leave hair feeling heavy or dull. The difference is not the oil itself, but how and why it is used.
Hair oils do not hydrate the hair. Hydration comes from water. Oils work by sealing in moisture, smoothing the cuticle, and reducing friction along the hair shaft. This is why oil performs best when applied to slightly damp hair or layered over water based products.
What hair oil actually does
Oils create a protective layer that slows moisture loss from the hair. Certain oils can also penetrate into the hair fibre, helping reduce protein loss during washing and styling. Others remain mostly on the surface, adding softness and shine.
Lightweight oils such as jojoba closely mimic the scalp’s natural sebum and absorb easily. Heavier oils such as castor sit more on the surface and are best used sparingly or as targeted treatments.
Scalp Oiling
Scalp oiling should feel soothing, never greasy. Apply a small amount directly to the scalp and massage gently for a few minutes. This helps distribute the oil evenly and supports circulation. Scalp oiling is best done before washing, especially if you tend to have finer hair or an oil sensitive scalp.
Leave on for thirty minutes to a few hours before shampooing. Overnight oiling is not necessary for most people and may lead to buildup if done too frequently.
How to oil the lengths
For daily or regular use, apply one to three drops to the mid lengths and ends. Warm the oil between your palms and smooth lightly. This reduces friction, enhances shine, and helps protect against dryness.
For thicker or textured hair, oil can be layered over damp hair to help seal in moisture and improve softness.
Common mistakes
Using too much oil, applying it to dry hair expecting hydration, skipping shampoo after heavy oiling, and choosing oils that are too heavy for your hair type are all common mistakes that can limit results. Hair oiling works best when it is intentional and minimal, focusing on nourishing the hair without overwhelming it. The goal is balance, not saturation.
